Frumpy to Fabulous

Baggy clothes can be comfy, but definitely aren't the most flattering. Don't worry, you don't have to give them up, but you do need to style them. There's a few simple steps you can follow as a guide to styling oversized or boxy pieces.

  1. Make sure to give yourself some shape. Even if your waist isn't tiny, that doesn't mean you want it to get lost in a bunch of fabric (not flattering!).
  2. Accessorize. Accessories can dress up even the simplest of outfits and can make any outfit look put together.
  3. Shoes matter. Even if you live in sneakers, there is a right and wrong pair for any given outfit. Be mindful when selecting your shoes and make sure they enhance the look you're going for instead of take away from it.
Tan and white striped shirt

In the image above you can see our model is wearing the same oversized striped shirt with long wide leg jeans. The image on the left she put the clothes on with her tennis shoes, but didn't attempt to style it whatsoever. This outfit makes her appear larger than she is and also looks sloppy.

In the image on the righthand side we swapped the model's shoes with a wedge to give her some height, elongating her leg length. In addition we tucked the back of her shirt in to tighten the front of the shirt and give her some shape. Last, we accessorized by adding a tote bag, simple gold letter necklace and earrings.

In the example above we do a similar makeover as we did with the striped shirt. The pink shirt in this example is not as much material as the striped shirt was, however it is still boxy shaped and quite a bright color so we wanted to balance it.
We tucked the shirt in all the way around, added a belt, swapped her shoes, accessorized with a black bag to match the belt and shoes and a white necklace to match her white nails. In addition, we added a teal bandana as a headband as the "cherry on top". This took the outfit from sloppy and stark to fabulous and put together.
Even if you aren't a stylist you can use the three step rule when dressing yourself. We promise, it's simple, will make you look great and earn you some compliments!
